On my morning bike ride yesterday, I happened upon a patch of yellow wildflowers that I had not yet observed this summer; Showy goldenrod (Solidago speciosa ssp. speciosa var. speciosa). I returned to the patch on the way to work to snap a few pictures. 
The appearance of the first blooming goldenrod mean that the wave of summer wildflower bloom is half over. From this point on a large majority of blooming wildflowers will be of the Aster family, including several goldenrod species, sunflowers, true asters, blazing star and bidens. Better get out there to see them while the getting is good – Autumn will be here before we know it!
