Orange You Glad I Didn’t Say Banana?

Of the hundreds of wildflowers found in this area, there are only a handful of orange-flowered ones. I saw four of them today on a quick drive through Crex. The only one I did not find today was Michigan Lily.

Butterfly Milkweed. One of the hosts of the Monarch caterpillar.

Orange Hawkweed, an introduced and sometimes invasive plant. I like these though, and they don’t seem very aggressive around here.
Wood Lily, a prairie plant.

Indian Paintbrush. The true flower petals are actually green. The orange parts are bracts.
Indian Paintbrush has been recently reclassified from the Snapdragon Family to the Broomrape Family because they are partially parasitic on other plants.
